Health Care Aide

Welcome to our main page for Health Care Aides! You can use the tabs located to the right of this one to access information about the competency assessment we offer for HCAs, the steps involved in the application process, and methods of payment.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us using the form or the telephone number available on our Contact Us page.

Thank you for your interest in our services.
Assessment Steps:
  1. Contact us to indicate your interest in having an assessment completed.
  2. You will be required to complete an interview, either in-person or via Skype video chat. Also, you must complete some case study responses, where you will address questions related to the provincial curriculum content and the HCA Competencies for BC.
  3. If your responses to questions in the interview and case study responses are found to be safe, a short period of preceptorship will be arranged for you in a residential care facility (4 days). The first 3 days will be orientation shifts, where you will work with a preceptor Care Aide.
  4. On the 4th day of the preceptorship period, an assessor will observe your practice as you provide care to 5 residents and interact with others. You may be asked to clarify some points in a debriefing session.

Requirements for the Preceptorship
In order to enter the clinical practice component of the assessment you will need to provide:
  1. a clear criminal record check (with "vulnerable sector check")
  2. evidence of up-to-date immunization
  3. scrubs and flat closed-toe shoes for the clinical area
A Note on Immunization
We need to see evidence of immunity to each of the following:
  • diphtheria and tetanus
  • hepatitis B
  • measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
  • varicella
  • influenza
If you have no records of immunity, bring this list to your family doctor or a walk-in clinic and request a blood titers test. We will need a copy of the results. Your doctor may recommend a booster shot for diptheria and tetanus because they are not tested in blood titers.

If You Are Successful
You will be provided with a competency letter and a copy will also be sent to the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry.

If You Are Not Successful
You may be eligible to retake the assessment after completion of some directed studies and a short period in clinical practice.
1. To apply for the competency assessment, please complete our Online Application Form.

2. Then make payment by using the next tab over to the right of this one.

3. Finally, don't forget to contact us if you have not done so already.

HCA Competency Assessment

Please note that you are not required to pay for both components of the assessment at the same time. The regular procedure is for you to make payment for the Interview & Online Case Studies and then upon completion of these, when you are ready to enter the residential care facility, make payment for the Preceptorship.
Also, please be aware that if the Consultant is required to travel outside the lower mainland of BC or to the Fraser Valley (e.g. Abbotsford/Chilliwack/Mission), mileage and/or travel fees will be added to the above costs. When a candidate is required to complete further studies a fee schedule will be provided with the additional costs involved.
